who is Fred?

My greatgrandfather was called Fred Greenaway by everyone. It even stood on his grave, marriage certificate and death certificate, and on his WW1 medal record as Frederick. The problem is that I canīt find his birth certificate - he was born around 1882 +- 1 year. On his marriage certificate his father is listed as Alfred Greenaway "Dealer". He lived in Hurstborne Tarrent, Hampshire. He fought in the Boer war and so is missing in the 1901 census.
Iīve been in the records office and could find no fitting Fred and only one Alfred Greenaway, with father Alfred as "dealer" in Green Hill Wiltshire in census records. He would seem to fit, but all the certificates with Fred on make me unsure - can anyone help prove or disprove if Fred really is Alfred???
