I have a bit of information about the "Greenway-Hartley Diary" that you mention, andit may save time and effortofsomeone searching for it. It is,instead, a timeline of about 106community events--births, marriages and deaths of unrelated people living near present Lenoir, Caldwell County, NC--rather than a journal/diary one would probably imagine to hold daily entries ofpersonal and family happenings and observations. It is valuable because the entries long predate public vital record keeping, and the 1875 introduction of a newspaper at Lenoir. The Greenway was Col. William Greenway, son of Joseph, Sr., and the Hartley was the colonel's son-in-law Alfred (1793-1851), husband of Lucy Greenway and son of George Hartley, Sr. and his wife Elizabeth (Davis).
Many or all of the vital records and a few alarming events like fires which comprise the "diary" are reprinted in W. W. Scott's "Annals of Caldwell County," published about l93l in book form. (It maybe in reprint still.) Previously, the "diary"appeared in a Lenoir newspaper. It was Mr. Scott (1853-1931) who termed it the "Greenway-Hartley Diary,"and he did a heroic task in preserving it by publishing it, after Lucy (Greenway)Hartleykept it carefully for some forty years after Alfred's death.Although the discussion is so involved as to make one's head ache, one can make a good case for the timeline beingthe work of Alfred Hartley (from 1818 to 1823, mostly),rather than of Col. Greenway.I think the latter, a schoolmaster, became involved because his fine penmanship recorded a set of old family births and deaths for his neighbor Hartleys and Tuckers, stored with the diary/timeline. These people were Alfred Hartley's kin. The earliest and latest dates there--Hartley dates, 1761 and 1803--were misinterpreted by Mr. Scott as a spanin which Col. Greenway kept the diary.
The timelinemay have perished in a fire that consumed Mr. Scott's home.
