I have been researching my RI lines, and particularly the Green(e)s for 37 years now. I know of at least one individual who moved from RI to NC during the colonial period. There certainly may have been others.
I was unaware of a gov't sponsored migration. What government? When? What is the source of your information?
Too many families, including my own, have anecdotal traditions of a relationship to historical heroes of the past with whom they share a common surname. In my case the relationship is not near as close as the tradition claimed. In many cases, the tradition can not be documented and its accuracy is doubtful.
NJ can be a tough state to research. After my last research trip in October, I threw in the towel and have given up on my Cornells in NJ. The earliest record they left is a 1762 baptism. I continue to watch DNA results hoping some descendant of my Cornells will be tested and will match with someone else with a longer proven line. smgf.org will test DNA for free and test results on the smgf website gave me the first clue that cracked my RI Greene brickwall.
I have seen claims that one or two of the Greenes from Rhode Island may have migrated to NJ in the latter half of the 1600s. But I have not seen anything in the original RI records that I have read that would verify these claims.
If you are looking for Thomas and Margaretha in the pre-Rev War era, then you should look in the published collections of early NJ records.
