William and Dinah Green of Berkeley WV
I am currently researching the possible parents of William Green who married Dinah Butt around 1724 in Southern Maryland. Dinah (b. 1708) was the daughter of Richard & Mary Butt. Mary remarried after Richard's death, John Metcalfe (m.1715-1718) and had 3 more children by him, Susan, Vachel and George.
The parents of William Green may have been:
1) James (owner of Aire and Strife) & Charity Green of Prince Georges Co., MD. James died abt 1734 and Charity abt 1754. James names a son William in his will, Charity does not name William. A William Green died in PG Co. in 1740, he may be the son of James which would rule out this family.
2) James Green. A William Green originally of Covent Garden, London, England, (owner of Greenland) of Calvert Co., MD (later became part of Charles Co.) also had a son named James. William died around 1674. James was residing in London England in 1688 when he sold his father's property in Calvert Co. This may or may not be the same James who, returning to Maryland, married Charity. James was the only surviving son of William Green by 1688. This James may also be a candidate for our William's father.
3) Robert and Mary (Boarman) Green of Charles Co. MD. Robert had a son named William born Dec 1694. This William was involved in a Chancery case in Charles county with Richard Coombs. I am hoping that someone has a copy of this Chancery case (1727) which may give us more information that could confirm or dismiss this William Green as our ancestor.
Of course there is always the possibility that our William was the immigrant ancestor.
Has anyone done more in depth research to locate William's parents?
I also want to add that William and Dinah's son, Regnal, was not married to Sarah Duncan. Robert Green (A Branch from the Green Tree) had based that marriage on the will of Matthew Duncan. Robert later discovered, after the publication of his book, that Matthew Duncan's sister was not Sarah Green, but Sarah Greer. So all of us who descend from Regnal are back to square one on Regnal's first wife.
