John F. Green married Matilda Huff in Madison Co Mo, where they lived in 1850 shortly after their marriage. They had eight daughters and one son and moved to Texas in 1865, where they settled down in Wilson Co in the town of La Vernia. The names of the Green children were: Emily Elizabeth "Emma", Phoebe Lou, Ralsta, Rebecca "Beckie", Nancy Jane "Nannie", Sarah F. "Sallie", Marzee, Frankie and Martin. The son, Martin Green, apparently died as a child. One of the eight daughters, Rebecca (Beckie) Green ran away in the early 1880s and married Jose Francisco Chevado, a Mexican worker on the Green farm. Apparently this led to great strife in the Green family, resulting in a breakup in the marriage of John and Matilda Green. John went to live with his daughter Phoebe Green Davis and Matilda moved to San Antonio, where she operated a Boarding House with her daughter Marzee and son-in-law, John Erb. Beckie and Francisco Chevado had three sons and a daughter. Francisco drowned in 1895 while attempting so save someone in a stiorm-swollen stream. In January of 1896, Beckie Chevado also died and the four children were admitted to Buckner's Orphanage, near Dallas, on March 15, 1895 by their grandfather, John F. Green. In April 1896 one of the children, Joseph Chevado, drowned in a tank while his two older brothers and younger sister were in a classroom at the orphanage. To compound this tragedy, in January of 1897, a fire swept through the orphanage and 16 children were burned to death. John F. Green died sometime between 1896 and 1900 and Matilda Marzee Green continued to operate the boarding house on Commerce Avenue until about 1910 and died in San Antonio in 1915. I have a photo that shows six of the eight Green sisters in 1927: http://heathcock.org/genealogy/wf01/wf01_113.html I can only identify two of them (Emily "Emma" Green Goodrich and Nancy Green Lay). The other four are, I believe: Phoebe Green Davis Marzee Green Erb Ralsta Green Dudds Sarah "Sallie" Green Ford If anyone finds this link and can identify any of the women, please reply.
