Your advice to check primary sources is good. But then you revert to a line from familysearch.org.Can you give documentation for this line?
The published genealogies show that the Joseph Greene you mention married Margaret Greenman.Ruth Matteson m John Greene in 1778 and thus could not be the mother of Duty b 1761.
I have Walter and Ella Greene's published several books subsequent to 1964.I have their 1981 and previous Greene books. But they also published additional books after 1981.
John Greene of Q m Joan (surname unknown).Since her name comes from a 1682 deed, we can only say that she was possibly the mother of his children. As you say, she was not Joan Beggarly (Alice Daniels) mentioned by Gov Winthrop.
The accepted date of death for John of Q was after the date of the deed in which his wife joined him, i.e. 24 Mar 1681/2 and before 25 Sep 1685 when he is mentioned as deceased in a deed from Joseph Clark to Francis Brinley in the Jamestown records.I think we can narrow that date range down furtherfrom the West Greenwich records where the son of John Greene of Q, called Lieutenant John Greene of Newport perfected his right to land he and his father acquired as participants in the Fones Purchase. This was done on 14 May 1685 and the "Jr." designation for the son was no longer used.
The two or three John issue was settled in 1918 with the publication of a series of articles in Rhode Island Historical Society Collections by Louise Prosser Bates.I have verified Mrs. Bates analysis from the West Greenwich records. No one has refuted Mrs. Bates arguments. There were three John Greenes who immigrated to RI inb the early to mid-1600s.John Greene of Warwick, John Greene of Quidnessett and John Greene of West Greenwich and Coventry who married Abigail Wardwell.By the way, the English ancestry of all three is unknown. There are no primary or contemporary records from the 1600s that show the ancestry of any of the three.
