Ernest.I highly recommend you join and everyone else that is interested in genealogy. My Wright DNA is being tested along with a "proven" 6th cousin and an alleged "6th cousin."We are looking for another candidate from a related line to test.
The mutation rate is estimated to be a 50% probability for one mutated marker in 7 generations.6th cousins have a common ancestor 8 generations back.So with out 25 marker tests, we should show no more than 1 or 2 different markers. If we differ by more than 2, then we probably have an illegitimate birth in one of our lines, since our relationship is "proven."
What we are trying to establish is which of 3 William Wrights who lived in Bourbon Co, KY, in 1790, are descended from our immigrant William Wright from Virginia. The alleged "sixth cousin" has a proven descent from one of the Williams in Bourbon. We think he is unrelated. We are seeking a "proven" male descendant from one of the other Williams of Bourbon whom we think is related. So far, we can track male descendants of this other William to about 1925.
I also have Green(e) ancestry.I have sponsored a 25-marker test for a 3rd cousin, surnamed Greene. He is one of only two living male Greenes who descend from our earliest proven Greene ancestor. In our case our earliest Greene ancestor could well have been illegitimate. On the Greene DNA Project website, there are 4 Green(e)s claiming RI descents. Two of them match, but have not tracked their lines back to the immigrant. If my 3rd cousin's DNA matches another Greene, then we will know that we share a common ancestor and the illegitimate suspicion decreases materially. If it doesn't match, Family Tree DNA has agreed to compare my third cousin's DNA with the entire database and we may get a lead to the surname of the unknown father.
Look at the potential with respect to the Greenes in RI.There is a controversy as to how many John Greenes settled in RI in the mid 1600s.Some say there were 2 and some say 3.A Greene genealogy claims they are all related, but there is no documentary proof that they are.Once we have enough men tested with proven ancestries back to the 3 Johns, then we will know if they all share a common ancestor or if none of them do, or if only 2 do.
The Spring 2004 issue of "New England Ancestors" published by the New Englan Hist. Genealogical Society, has an article on the results of DNA testing of "The Barretts of New England."A fascinating article that shows how the testing can solve some difficult genealogical issues.
I live in Houston and visited FamTreeDNA's office to get a feel for the business.I felt good enough to go ahead with my own test and that of my 3rd cousin.
You can also test a maternal line. The mitochrondrial (sp?) DNA is passed from mother to child unchanged. So my brother and I, my mother, my aunts, grandmother, ggm, gggm, etc. should all have the same mitochrondrial DNA.But my sons and daughter will have a different mitochrondrial DNA, since theirs will match my wife's.
For paternal lines, the Y-chromosome DNA is tested. This Y-chromosones are passed down from father to son without change.Note: the estimated mutation rate is a 50% probability for the change of one marker in 7 generations.
I am not a professional. My high school biology teacher was a gym teacher. We even missed out on the frogs.I have been watching the development of these DNA tests for a couple of years.I finally decided it was time to do something about it.
So by having your DNa tested you will be doing yourself, your family and relatives and others of your surname a favor.I think the potential for these tests in enhancing our knowledge of our ancestral roots is outstanding.
Bill Wright (that's correct, another William!)Everywhere I look there are at least 2 William Wrights in the records that have to be sorted out.
