Brittana (Britta Ann) Green
I can find no record of anyone researching Brittana (Britta Ann) Green either before or after she married John McGuire and gave birth three children. Can anyone can fill in the blanks I have listed at
the end of this message?
I have listed the below the known, provable facts in normal type. My
conjectures based on what I now know are in (). Here we go:
Brittana Green, born June 1834 (some where in Jefferson County, AL; father either Robert, George S., or Joseph Green). Died after 1910 (between 1910 and 1920; see notes; in Jefferson County, AL) aged 75+
Also known as Britta Ann, Brittan, Britannia, Britana, and Bellie.
Married John L. McGuire on January 24, 1854 in Jefferson County, AL. He was born about 1833 (died 1864). Had three children with John: Ellen, born about 1855 in AL, (died 1937) & had issue; Mary Drucilla, born October 22, 1858 in AL, died Feb. 2, 1928 in Jefferson County, AL & had issue; Steven Arnold Douglas. born Sept. 1860, died Shelby County, AL, & had issue.
Married Mike Flynn, born Ireland bet. 1818 and 1820, (died Nov. 1911 in
Jefferson County, AL) between 1860 & 1874. Had one child with Mike: Maggie A. Flynn, born about 1874, died Feb. 1936 in Jefferson County, AL, & had issue. Lived in Irondale.
Notes:
1. In the 1860 U.S. Census for AL, Britana is 27, and living on a farm with husband John, 27, and daughters Ellin, 5, and Mary, 3. She can read.
2. In the 1870 US Census for AL, she is listed as Britannia Flynn, living with second husband Mike Flynn, daughter Ellen 15 and son Douglas, 9. She is 36, born in AL, and can read and write.
3. In the 1880 US Census for AL, she is listed as Bellie A. Flynn, 45,
housekeeper, parents born NC.
4. In the 1900 US Census for AL, she is listed asBrittana A. Flynn, born in June 1834, 65, widowed, 7 pregnancies, 4 living, parents born SC, living with daughter Ellen Hill and son-in-law William Hill.
5. In the 1910 US Census for AL, she is listed as Britan Flynn, 76, widowed, can read and write, had six pregnancies of whom 3 are still living, born in AL, both parents born in SC. Living with daughter Maggie and son-in-law Henry Reinier.
6. No mention in the 1920 Census with the Reiniers.
7. Britania B. Eddins is NOT the same person, despite having common names and dying around the "right" time--June 30, 1912. She was married to Calvin Eddins and died in Escambia County.
8. I believe that Britana may be the daughter of Robert H. Green who is listed in the 1850 US Census in Jefferson County. There are two other Greens, George S., Joseph. According to the 1840 Census they all have girls in their households of the right age. But Joseph and George don’t seem to check out in later censuses.
Information I don't have:
1. Her location in the 1850 Census. She is not living with Robert H. Green in Green's District--was she hired out as a domestic servant in Cahaba Valley District, near where John McGuire lived?
2. Did John McGuire die in the Civil War in 1864?
3. Is Brittana buried in the Forest Crest Cemetery in Irondale, AL?
Happy hunting!
