Notes for JOHN LOUIS SMITH:
John Lewis Smith By Rena Smith Rendall
My grandfather, John Lewis Smith, came to Texas from Alabama soon after the civil war. The first record of his arrival in Swisher County was in the County Clerk's office of Hale County. The deed showed the land had been transferred from A.J. Maxwell to J. L. Smith in 1890. It had been a long trip from Cameron in Milam County, Texas when my grandfather and father arrived in Swisher County to make a new home. They spent several months there building a house and barns before my grandmother came with the other children. It took a week to make a round trip to Amarillo, where they had to go for lumber and building supplies. Meals were prepared from supplies in the chuck wagon. Occasionally, someone would shoot a rabbit and it would be the only fresh meal they ate on the trip.
At the end of six months, the homestead was ready for the rest of the family; my grandmother was Docia Green Smith; my father, Edgar Dean, called by his middle name, was fourteen years old. Enfield (Mrs. Fred Burk), C.R., Mable (Mrs. James J.W. Skipworth) Lamar, Lena (Mrs. Will Cantrell) and Cleveland (Cleve). Since there were no schools, the ranchers would hire a governess for several families. Dean had finished the eighth grade when they left Cameron. He helped on the ranch for four years and then went to Fort Worth to Polytechnical; today known as Texas Wesleyan College. He was there four years and he, too, became a teacher. That is where he met my Mother, Ada Sweazea, for he taught her younger brother and sisters.
It was the custom for teachers to move around and stay with families, whose children they taught. The Sweazeas lived in Castro County where they had moved from Clay County. The hardships of those early days were more difficult for my grandmother. Her father had been a slave owner and even after they were freed, there were Negroes to do most of the work. Negroes were not allowed in West Texas in those days so Grandma had to work which she never did very well. Pot Roast and Spice Cake were the best things she cooked.
Dean Smith and Ada Sweazea had been engaged for two years and he was going to Draughans Business College in Galveston. My father loved to tell the story of the Sunday before he was going to leave for school Mother had never kissed him, so when he took her home, he told her that if she couldn't kiss him good bye before he left for a year, the engagement was off. Duringthe week that followed, she talked with her parents about the problem, it was finally decided that she could kiss him good bye.
After the year in Galveston, he returned to Tulia, where he was in the Real Estate Business and had an abstract office. He was elected County Clerk of Swisher County on November 4, 1902; he and mother were married two weeks later. Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Smith sold their land in 1904, than built a new home in Tulia and moved there. I was born in January, 1905 and my sister Eula Dean, was born in September, 1907. When Eula was a baby, Daddy began to study law. He was admitted to the bar of Texas on December 7, 1911 at Amarillo. Grandfather was a familiar figure downtown in Tulia and both he and my grandmother went regularly to the First Baptist Church. At home he took care of his cow and chickens and grew wonderful vegetables. My brother, James Lewis Smith, was born in November, 1916. We moved to a farm in the Love Community, where we lived until December, 1925. After I finished the eighth grade at Love School, I stayed with my grandparents and went to Tulia High School. I graduated in May, 1922.
My Aunt Enfield, called Ennie, married Fred Burk and lived at Kress; C.R. was a Rancher and cattleman at Hereford; Aunt Mabel lived in and near Kress most of her married life. Lamar worked in a store in Tulia, but he died at a early age. Aunt Lena became an expert stenographer and worked in Washington during the first World war. When her husband, Herbert Smith, returned from France, he was reassigned to Alaska, but she stayed in Seattle. Many years later, Lena married Will Cantrell, they lived in Toppenish, Washington for the rest of her life. Cleve Smith began working for the Santa Fe Railroad when he was still a teenager. After several years he moved to
Chicago. He served with the Army during World War I and died a few years later.
My grandfather died in the Fall of 1922; he was one of the remaining Confederate Veterans in Swisher County. Grandmother Smith died just before Christmas, 1929.
My sister and I entered Texas Tech when it opened in 1925, and the family moved to Lubbock that winter. I was the first student to complete the work for my B.S. Degree in Home Economics in December, 1927 and graduated in 1928, Spring Class. My sister has both her B.S. and M.A. Degrees from Tech. In 1928, my parents moved to Crane, Texas, my brother and his family still live there.
My father died on March 8, 1952, his seventy-fifth birthday. Mother died on March 9, 1954. My sister, Mrs. Fay Hankins, lives in Lubbock, I have lived in El Paso since 1951. Eula and I have bother retired from teaching.
