I am searching for anyone with ties to the Loizakes (Loizakis) family of Skopelos, Greece. I am working on my best friend's family history and would like to contact anyone with knowledge of this family. The Loizakes/Loizakis family is possibly connected with the Valsamakis family of Skopelos.
Michael "Mike" George Loizakes was born 9/14/1878 on Skopelos and per the 1920 Federal Census, was in the United States by 1900. He apparently lived in NYC for some time before coming south to Savannah, GA to work in the ship yards. We have information suggesting that he once worked for F.W. Vanderbilt as there are records of his return to NYC from Colombia, South America aboard the "Prinz Eitel Friedrich." Mike Loizakis' fare from Peurto Colombia, Colombia back to NYC was paid by F.W. Vanderbilt as was that of many other single men aboard the ship. The record dates back to 1914. On that same record he lists his previous residence as NYC and next of kin as Despina Loizakis of Skopelos, Greece. On the 1920 Census, Mike Loizakes stated that he came into the US in 1900 and was married to Mary Jane Tann about 1917. The family lived in Savannah, GA and eventually Jacksonville, FL.
Anyone with information on the Loizakes/Loizakis family is welcome to contact me as I would love to learn more about the family's roots in Greece!
