variations - grellis/grelis/greelis

I've hit a brick wall with grellis, maybe because of the spelling - we pronounce it like the garden fence Trellis with the e like Ellis or egg. Maybe whoever documented the family wrote it as they pronounced it - Interested to know how others pronounce variations and whether regional Irish accents would have made a difference.
My link, Michael Grellis, possibly came from Mayo, then emigrated to America (?where, never heard of again,) when his (poss first)wife,Mary Scanlon, died. He left 2 boys with an aunt(?name)and eventually went to scotland.
I have a microfiche printout of grealish/greelis/grelis/grealis births and 2 marriages in mayo/galway 1850/60s (about 30 names) which I can't link - happy to share if anyone wants a lookup.
Would apprieciate any help to go sideways, backwards or forwards with Michael.
