Lisa, I have done considerable research on the various GRASS families who were in VA by 1769 and have that your Rebecca GRASS was the dau. of Jacob GRASS(3) and his wife Jenny MOORE who were md. in Albemarle Co., VA on 4 Mar 1805. I have narrowed him down from three other Jacob GRASS men who were born (and married) close to the same times: Jacob GRASS(3), son of Jacob GRASS, Jr.(2) and his wife Elizabeth HAWK of Augusta Co., VA. This Jacob GRASS, Jr. died intestate ca. 1783 in Augusta Co., VA and his widow, Elizabeth md. 2) Henry VOGES/FOGAS and moved to Albemarle Co., VA. Jacob GRASS, Jr.(2) & Elizabeth HAWK had two sons that I know of-----hubby's John GRASS(3) and, I believe, "this" Jacob GRASS(3). Jacob GRASS(3) was made guardian of Jane MOORE on 4 Mar 1805 in Albemarle Co., VA and probably md. her either that day or soon after. Jane was said to be the dau. of L.R. MOORE and James Brooks was the "security" for Jacob GRASS. (Guardian's Bonds of Albemarle Co., VA, 1783-1852, Courthouse, Albemarle Co., VA). Jacob GRASS(3) md. Jenny (probably the same as Jane above) MOORE in Albemarle Co., VA on 4 Mar 1805 and appears in the following records: Albemarle Co., VA Personal Property Tax Records: 1804-05, 1809-1812 1814-1820 Censuses: 1810: Albemarle Co., VA - as Jackob Grafs (his name was next to that of his brother, John. (p. 158) 1820: Albemarle Co., VA - as Jacob Grast (p. 34) 1830: Kanawha Co., (W)VA - as Jacob Grass (p. 192) - probably went there because his uncle Peter Grass & cousins (sons of Peter) were there 1840: Kanawha Co., (W)VA - as Jacob Grafs (couldn't read pg. no.) 1850: Knox Co., IL (p. 424) - John & Elizabeth ESSEX lived nearby. Frank Borror whose E-Mail address in 1997 was Libertyep@aol.com sent the following information that year: Jacob GRASS died in Knox Co., IL in 1852. His widow died there the same year. In Jacob's will, he names his wife as Jane Ellen GRAFS which matches with the record of a Guardian's Bond that I found in the Albemarle Co., VA records. It seems that, in those days, if a person whose father was deceased did not have a guardian, one was appointed for them when they wanted to get married or execute a deed or some other document. On 4 Mar 1805 in Albemarle Co., VA, Jacob GRASS was appointed guardian to Jane MOORE, dau. of L. R. MOORE (doesn't say he is deceased, though). James BROOKS was "security" with Jacob GRASS on this. (Albemarle Co., VA Guardian's Bonds, 1783-1852) The Albemarle Co., VA Marriages show that Jacob and Jane were md. the same day----4 Mar 1805. Back to Knox Co., IL: The "General Index to Estates" for Knox Co., IL shows that: Year-Name of Deceased - Adm. or Exec. 1852 Grass, Jacob - John Essex 1852 Grass, Jane - John Essex On 20 Dec 1852, John Essex appeared in court there and gave testimony that Jane GRAFS died there on 7 Dec 1852. He also gave a listing of the items in her estate. Hope this helps, Dolores in CA Notify Administrator about this message?
