This is to inform those interested that Microfilm #129 from the Evangelical and Reformed Historical Society in Lancaster, PA arrived yesterday and I've read all of the church records (15 in all) that were on it for the names that could possibly be CRESS, GRASS or KRESS (and any other imaginable spellings). The churches covered were: (all in PA) Adams Co. - 1 Berks Co. - 7 Bucks Co. - 1 Lancaster Co. - 1 Lebanon Co. - 2 Lehigh Co. - 1 Montgomery Co. - 1 (this was the most important now) I only found names of interest to the Augusta Co., VA (GRASS and CRESS) families in the following churches. WHITPAIN's (also called BLUE BELL or BOEHM's Church), 1764-1834), Montgomery Co., PA p. 4: Jacob Kress & wf. Magdalene were the sponsors at the baptism of Magdalene, dau. of Herman SCHUBER & wf. Barbara. Magdalene was b. 12 Oct 1766 and baptized on the "20th Sunday after Trinity" by Rev. John George Absente. NOTE: Whether or not this is our Jacob GRASS of Augusta Co., VA remains to be proven or disproven. p. 9: Isaac, son of John Graff & wf. Elizabeth, was b. 25 Sep 1772 and baptized 3 May 1773 by John Gabriel Gephard (no Rev. before his name). Frederick Doll & his wf. (not named) were the sponsors at the baptism. NOTE: This is probably not any of our Jacob GRASS' family as he was in Augusta Co., VA by 1769 and had no son named John and the first name Isaac is not one used by our GRASS family....although German men often had a first and a middle name, but usually went by their middle name if the first name was John or Johannes. p. 14: John George, son of Martin Sommer & wf. Elizabeth, was b. 1 Oct 1789 and baptized 1 Nov 1789 by Rev. Philip R. Pauli. George Sommer and Elizabeth Haupt were the sponsors. NOTE: This was copied because of the SUMMER/SOMMER connection in the George CRESS/KRESS family of VA and OH. The Whipain church records were absolutely negative for the names HEIZER and BURK(E). These records as given by a HEIZER correspondent must be in the records of Heinrich Muhlenberg. I have been unable to locate any of his records to date. Maybe someone else can help on this. QUITOPAHILLA or HILL CHURCH, near Annville, Lebanon Co., PA: p. 2: Elsa Maria, dau. of Johannes GRISS & wf. Anna Maria Miller, died 13 ---- 1753. Sponsors: Johannes Friarig Schreiber & Anna Gertauta. NOTE: It is not clear whether this is a birth or death, but it is definitely written as a death in the baptismal section of these records otherwise and it is interesting that "sponsors" are given which never occurs in death records. I also noted the names SIEG, SEITZ and there was another interesting entry which obviously belongs to the Rudolph HAWP & wf. Catherine of Augusta Co., VA.....as follows: p. 6: Anna Catrina, dau. of Henrich Seitz & wf. Anna (maiden nm. not given), was bapt'd Sept ----, 1755. Sponsors were Rudolf Hob & Catrina Helman. NOTE: The Rudolph HAWP of Augusta Co., VA md. Catharina HEYLMAN by 1764....don't know where, but the above appears to be them before their marriage. It is not known whether this Rudolph HAWP is related in any way to Henry HAWK whose dau., Elizabeth, md. our Jacob GRASS, Jr. in Augusta Co., VA. Other names also noted in this church's records were: Jacob SIEG and Magdalena SIEG - 1761 Christoffel MEYER & wf. (not named) - 1747 Elizabeth SUSS (umlaut over the "u"0) - a sponsor in 1760 So much for now.... Dolores Notify Administrator about this message?
