I am trying to help a young man, James Butler, with his genealogy. He descends on his maternal side from Adam Grantham through his daughter Mary J. who was born ca 1830 in Alabama. Mary J. married a Butler, first name unknown before 1853 since daughter Elizabeth J. was born that year in MS and son William Adam Butler was born in 1856 in Newton Co. MS. Since the only son is named William Adam, and Adam is his maternal grandfather's name, I am guessing that William might be the name of his father or his paternal grandfather.
I have done the census checks, and cannot find Mary J. and ---- Butler in 1850 anywhere. In 1860, Mary and the two children are living next door to her father Adam Grantham in Lauderdale County.
By 1870, she has remarried - this time to John A. Smith and has many more children along with the two Butlers. Also in the household is Gabrice/Gabriel Grantham - age 49 whom I assume to be her brother.
Does anyone know the given name of the Butler that she married and where and when she married him? I assume she married around 1850ish or shortly before. Mary's father Adam Grantham was in Kemper at that time, and Mary was no longer in his household. Adam had arrived around 1840 in Kemper Co. MS. In 1830 he was in Marengo Co AL which is likely where Mary J. was born.
Any help with this family will be greatly appreciated.
