Trying to determine the parents of George K. Grant and have census data on him for 1850, 1860, 1870 in Sullivan, Indiana. He is listed as being born 1818 or 1820 in Indiana on these census forms. It appears he died sometime during the 1870s as his widow (Mahala Earnest maiden name) appears as the sole member of household on the 1880 Census working as a servant.
Problems tracing back before 1850 Census given limits on census data prior to then. Have pulled all the Census information for Grants in Indiana for 1840, 1830 and 1820, but have not narrowed down his potential family very well as still working with a few dozen possibilities. Levi Grant (born in 1800) is good potential head of the family as Levi’s father was named George combined with the common historical convention to name first born son after father’s, father. George would have been the first born son of Levi and the Census data from 1840 matches this scenario showing three boys aged 15 to 30. No other census data available though on Levi in 1830 or 1820 in Indiana despite the fact that family trees on ancestry.com show him living in Indiana throughout this period and having children. Next step is to research is to dig out non-Census records, but not sure what county and first name to focus on.
Children with Mahala Earnest included Angeline, Jasper, Francis, Adam, Ellen, William, Louisa (born 1842 to 1857). I am a descendant of Louisa.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
