I have recently worked on the Grant family of Botetourt County, Virginia, looking for the parents of Christopher Grant. David Grant was one of the possibilities that I considered. I now believe that David Grant was an older brother of Christopher, and a son of William Grant. William Grant appears in county tax lists from as early as 1794. David Grant appeared in the tax list in 1800, next to William, but in 1799 David was not listed, and William was listed with an extra while male in his home that was over the age of 18. In 1800 that male was gone from William's home, and David appeared in the records. I believe that suggests that David was the son of William. In 1806 and 1807 William appears in the county for the last time. In 1808, A Christopher Grant was presented in court by the Overseers of the Poor, as an Orphan to be apprenticed to learn the art of a Tanner. Under Virginia law, when a child has been orphaned, and has no property or estate to fall back on, he falls under the care of the Overseers of the Poor and is apprenticed out. The disappearance of William Grant followed by the apprenticeship of Christopher suggests that they were father and son. In 1780, William Grant appeared in court records when he and several other men, who were part of a Tory Militia, were captured and tried for their crime. Several were sent to Jail, but William Grant volunteered to serve in the American Army and his charges were dismissed. For more information contact me at my e-mail (jim@heirlines.com).
