Francis Granger, Died in 1898 or 1899

Greetings to all the members of the Granger Family!

For the past five years, I have been researching the history of the parish which is now the Cathedral Church of the Episcopal Diocese of West Missouri, Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral, located in Kansas City, Missouri.

Originally, there were two downtown Kansas City parishes, Grace Church, and Trinity Church. They were merged in 1917 and became Grace and Holy Trinity Church. On October 29, 1935, the church was consecrated as the Cathedral of the Diocese.

Trinity Church was designed in 1887 by the important Chicago architecture firm of Burling and Whitehouse. Francis Meredyth Whitehouse was the youngest son of The Right Reverend Henry John Whitehouse (1803-1874). Bishop Whitehouse was a proponent of adoption of the English Cathedral system in the United States.

After the death of Bishop Whitehouse, an Episcopal Clergyman named Francis Granger picked up the cause of the Cathedral system, and even wrote a book on the subject.

I am having difficulty locating any information on Reverend Granger. The National Episcopal Archives has no information on him other than the fact that his death was acknowledged in the annual address of the Bishop of the Diocese of Western New York in 1899, but no date is given -- only that Reverend Granger passed away during the past year, which is broad enough to include both 1898 and 1899 as the possible year of his death.

The Diocese of Western New York is currently moving its offices and I am told that nothing in their archives is accessible now and will not be until February. (I find it difficult to believe that no provision has been made to access information during the transition, but it is just another in the amazing stories I can tell about attempting to obtain genealogical information from any source in New York State!)

I only know that Reverend Granger was active in the Episcopal Diocese of Western New York from 1877 until his death in 1898 or 1899.

Please, can anyone give me his exact years of birth and death? I need this information as soon as possible.

If you can assist me, please feel free to contact me directly at

Thank you so very much for your assistance.
