The origin of the french "Grange" is the center region of the country. It is found mainly in three "departements" (counties): Loire, Rhone and Puy de Dôme. Check that with this link that visualizes the frequency of births, for any name, during the XXth century : http://195.6.231.241/scoring/patronyme/index.asp Once you've done that, write down the county's name and use the phonebook website to see if there are still any members in a particular city or region : http://www.pagesjaunes.fr/wbpm_pages_blanches.cgi? But if there are too many answers (>100), you'll be asked for precisions. This makes the website useless. For Ms Flynn: Montbeliard was a safe heaven for protestants, because it belonged to a german lord. Because the name is rare in this aera, I asume that the members of this family had converted to the reformed religion and fled there to avoid persecution. My family comes from Puy de Dome (Auvergne). I know nothing about other Grange families but I'd be delighted to know about Grange members emigrating from this province or neighbourg Limousin to the new world. nb: The name is very common in St Etienne (Loire).
