NOTE: Also see 30 Sep 1667. 1652 Oct 8 --LANCASTER CO VA court Judgment on behalf of Mr Henry Doney for 350 lbs tobacco, with 2 years of interest to Edward Grimes, to be paid within 10 days. 1652/53 Jan 10 --LANCASTER CO VA court Court accounts: To Edw: Grimes for his boate ... 100 lbs tobacco 1652 (probably 1652/53) Mar 16 --LANCASTER CO VA court “I Sam’ll GOOCH of ye county of Lancaster send greetings in our Lord everlasting. Whereas Mary, ye daughter of Tho: ATTAWELL, dec’d, beinge possest of a certaine stock of cattle beinge foure cows one yearlinge heifer & one cow calfe newly fallen of a cow called Mall left her by her dec’d father aforesd. And for as much as Edw: GRIMES & Marg: his wife, ye late relict of ye sd ATTAWELL, & feoffees in trust for ye sd Marg:, have in consideracon of mariage to be solemnized between me ye sd S. GOOCH & ye sd Marye, obliged me yt ye sd stock of cattle should wth their whole increase be & at all times remaine in ye right & possession of her ye sd Marye. Therefore, know ye yt I ye sd Sa: GOOCH doe accordingly disimpart relinquish and make over unto her all I myselfe might laye or p:sume or pr:tend to ye sd cattle wth their increase by vertue of mariage with ye sd Mary, but if ye cattle wth their increase whatsoever (in case I ye sd Sa: GOOCH shall expire before her) ....etc etc. 1653 Jun 15 --LANCASTER CO VA Thos ROOTS was granted 50a in Lancaster Co, “E[aster]ly upon Corocomon River, S[outher]ly upon Spring Branch, & NNE upon lands of Edward GRIMES, dec’d”; for the transportation of Thos ROOTS. NOTE: Evidently there is a date mistake here, or in the will in the next record below, or there were two different Edwards involved. 1653 Aug “first daye” --LANCASTER CO VA Edward GRIMES of Lancaster Co signed his will .... “havinge been longe afflicted & diseased”; ---wife Margaret, all my goods & chattels and cattle, she remaining single; --bequests to Wm Wraton, An White & Mary Gooch if wife remarries; ---my daughter-in-law (sic; step daughter) Fra: ATTAWELL, my land in Rappahannock River, 437a in 3 separate patents; --executrix wife; --Wm Newsam & Wm Wraton supervisors; ---witnessed by Davey FOX and John PHILIPS; ---proved 9 10bris (Dec) 1653. NOTE: Edward Grimes, husband of Margaret, died between 1 Aug 1653 (the date of this will) and 14 Oct 1653. However, also note the NOTE following the record next above. NOTE: Also see 1653 Aug 7 below. 1653 Aug 3 --LANCASTER CO VA court Whereas Edward Grimes & Wm White have onlesly (sic) being arrested to these two courts past by Robt Mascall, the court finding no just cause of action have adjudged ye plts to pay to ye defts costs of suits & damages sufficient. ANOTHER VERSION / DATE / COUNTY 1653 Aug 8 --NORTHUMBERLAND CO VA Edward GRIMES and Wm. WHITE have causelessly been arrested by Robert MASCALL who is ordered to pay them damages. Fleet, Northumbria Collectanea, 1645-1720 1653 Aug 7 --LANCASTER CO VA Will of Edward Grimes of Lancaster Co (recorded 10 Feb 1653/54): --wife Margaret; --Wm Wraton, Ann White, Mary Gooch; ---daughter-in-law [sic; stepdaughter] Fra: Attawell, land in Rappahannock Co; --executor wife Mar: Grimes; --witnessed by Davey Fox, John Philips. NOTE: Also see 1653 Aug 1 above. NOTE: Although Edward’s will was not proved until 10 Feb 1653/54, he died by 14 Oct 1653, next record. 1653 8ber (Oct) 14 --LANCASTER CO VA A man might also make over to a wife-to-be the estate left her by a parent and execute a document to protect it after his death: “To all whome these presents shall come, I Tho. ROOTE in ye countye of Lancaster, churgeon, send greetings in our Lord God everlasting. Whereas I ye said Tho: ROOTE & Fra: ATWELL, daughter of Mar: GRIMES, widdow, by Gods grace are contracted man & wife & do intend matriimony shall be solemnized wth ye sole consent of ye sd Marg:, her sd mother, now know ye yt I ye sd Tho: ROOTE in consideracon (sic) of mariage & ye tender love & affecion I bear unto ye sd Fra: three milch cows called ye names of Long Days, Pincks & Colt & their three calves of this yeares calvinge called Rose, Chery & Dragletail wth all their female increase to her ye sd Fra: her heirs executrs administratrs & assignes forever beinge formerly given to her by heer father ATTAWELL after ye decease of me ye sd Tho ROOTE. But if in case ye sd Tho: doe survive ye sd Fra: ye sd cattle shall be & remaine in ye possession of him ye sd ROOTE his heirs & assignes forever, shee ye sd Fra: dyinge without issue begotten of ye sd ROOTE,. But if it please God ye sd Fra: have one child or more by ye sd ROOTE before her decease yt then it shall be lawfull for ye sd Fra: to give & bequeath ye sd cattle wth all their female increase to what child or children she beareth wth warrantye yt it shall not be touched or taken for any debt or debts owinge by me sd ROOTE both cattle or chattles menable or whatsoever else belonginge now to ye sd Fra: In witness whereof I ye sd ROOTE have set my hand and seale this 14th day of 8ber 1653.” Witnessed by Edwin CONAWAY and Wm WHITE. 1653 Oct 24 --LANCASTER CO court tithables list, western side of Costatawoman Grimes family ... 5 Note: Others on list were listed by head of household’s given name. 1653 8bris (Oct) last daye --LANCASTER CO VA I Cuth: Potter of Lancaster ye lawful attorney of Capt Daniell Howe do release & discharge Marg’tt Grimes, widdow, of & from a bill for 800 lbs of tobacco under ye hande of her husband Edward Grimes, dec’d; witnessed by John Meredith, Edwin Conaway. 1653 Nov 1 --LANCASTER CO VA David FOX was granted 300a in Lancaster Co “upon the westermost side of Corotoman River, being commonly known by the name of the Narrow Neck, beginning at a small branch which divides this & the land of Edward GRIMES, dec’d, extending along side of said river N to another branch thereof, along same W to land of Wm RATON & Richard FLINT, etc.” 1653 Dec 8 --LANCASTER CO VA court Judgm’t confest by Margaret ye wife & executrix of Edward Grimes, dec’d, to Capt Henry Fleete for 777 lbs of tobacco. Same date --LANCASTER CO VA “These presents witness yt I Tho: ROOTE for divers & sundry causes & consideracons me thereunto moveinge have given & doe by these pr:sents give & grant unto Marg: GRIMES, ye relict of Edw: GRIMES, dec’d, all my right & title of & in 390a of land wth all ye houseinge thereon for & during er naturall life.” Witnessed by James WILLIAMSON and Peetr KNIGHTE. 1653/54 Feb 6 --LANCASTER CO VA court “Whereas Edward GRIMES is indebted to Elyas EDMONDS in 300 pds of tobaccoe & caske wch he had undertaken to pay to Ebey BONNEDY for ye use of ye sd EDMONDS whereas having failed, ye court hath ordered yt he paye ye sd sume to ye sd EDMONDS or assignes with all costs of suite within 20 dayes.” NOTE: Evidently there were two Edward Grimes (and maybe 3) in Lancaster Co at this time, because Edward husband of Margaret had already died. 1653/54 Feb 8 --LANCASTER CO VA I Thomas Roote of ye county of Lancaster, churgeon, send greeting, whereas I ye sd Thomas Roote and Frances Atwell, daughter of Margaret Grimes, widdow, by God’s grace are contracted man and wife & do intend matrimony shall be solemnized with ye sole consent of ye said Margaret, her said mother. 1653/54 Feb 10 --LANCASTER CO VA Will of Edward GRIMES recorded in Lancaster Co. (see above). wb 1, pg. 124. 1653/54 Feb 10 --LANCASTER CO VA I Samuel Gooch of ye county of Lancaster send greeting, whereas Mary ye daughter of Thos Attawell, dec’d, being possessed of four cows left her by her deceased father, for as much as Edward Grimes & Margaret his wife, ye late relict of ye said Attawell, have in consideration of marriage to be solemnized between ye said Gooch and ye sd Mary. 1654 Jun 6 --LANCASTER CO VA court “Whereas Wm CLAPHAM Jr hath impleaded Marg: GRIMES, widdow, for a debt of one hoghd of tobaccoe due from Wm DOWNMAN dec’d, & by her pr:mised paymt of, and whereas ye sd CLAPHAM did desire ye sd debt to be pd in cattle or hogs by ye sd Marg:, and for as much as since ye sd p:fer made ye said DOWNMAN is become D. to ye sd Marg: GRIMES in 100 lbs of tobaccoe, ye court hath ordered yt ye sd Marga: paye 250 lbs tobaccoe & caske to ye sd Wm CLAPHAM in pt of ye sd debt (costs of suite equally between them).” 1654 Aug 7 --LANCASTER CO VA court Whereas it appeareth yt ye estate of Elias Edmonds is indebted to Marg: Grimes, widdow, for 3 moneths dyett of a servt the court hath ordered yt Jno Meridith & Walter Herd, adm’rs of ye sd dec’d’s estate shall paye ye sd Marg: Grimes 300 lbs of tobacco. 1654 Oct 6 --LANCASTER CO VA court “Whereas Dominic THERRIOT hath been impleaded this court for lendinge of a gun to an Indyan contrary to ye knowne lawes of this country, & for as much as it appears yt Wm DENBY delivered ye sd gun to ye Indyan & procured powder & shot to loade ye same, the court hath ordered yt ye sd Dominic pay 1300 lbs of tobaccoe in pte of ye 2000 due by act of assembly & Wm DENBY ye other 700 & costs of the one halfe whereof is to be pd to Daniel JONES who gave informacon thereof & ye other halfe to be & remaine to ye use of ye sd countye & costs of suite to be equally borne betweene ye aforesd Dominic THERRIOTT & Wm DENBY and Major Jno: CARTER, Wm CLAPHAM Jr are to have 30 lbs of tobaccoe each of them for hire of two men two dayes to round (sic; surround?) ye house of Marga: GRIMES for ye death of ye Indyan from whome ye aforesd gun was taken.” Same date & court Upon ye petition of Marga: Grimes, the court hath ordered yt a steere sold by her to Daniel Foxcroft by attached for ye payment of 600 & odd pounds of tobacco, beinge ye price of ye sd steere. 1655 Jun 15 --LANCASTER CO VA William RAWTON / RAUGHTON was granted 27a in Lancaster Co, “SE upon the mouth of Corotoman River, SW & NW upon Edward GRYMES, dec’d.” Same date --LANCASTER CO VA Grant to Thomas Roots, 50a in Lancaster Co, bounding on Corotoman River, Spring Branch & 80a granted to Edward Grymes, dec’d. Same date --LANCASTER CO VA Edward GRIMES was granted 390a in Lancaster Co, “on N side of Rappahannock River; 150a called Quiacomack, lying SE upon the mouth of Corotoman River, running from the Spring Branch to a branch of the Island Neck Creek; 240a adjoining land of David FOX & a creek dividing same from land of Thos HARWOOD; granted unto Edward GRIMES in 2 patents, i.e. 23 Mar 1650 & 21 May 1651.” NOTE: This “seems” to be a patent finally approved after Edward’s death. Also see next record. Same date --LANCASTER CO VA Edward DIGGES Esqr granted Thos ROOTS 50a in Lancaster Co bounding easterly on Corotoman River, northerly upon a cove or branch called Spring Branch, north and northeasterly upon a seat of 80a granted to Edward GRYMES, dec’d, and SW & NW upon two other tracts of land granted to said GRYMES. 1656 Aug 5 --LANCASTER CO VA court Court orders payment of tobacco due to Mr Charles Grymes from estate of Nich: Forman. NOTE: This may be the first record found for Charles. 1656 Sep 3 --LANCASTER CO VA court Administration of the estate of Nich: FORMAN is granted to Mr Humphrey BOOTH, “he appearinge the greatest creditor.” BOOTH is ordered to pay 500 lbs of tobacco & caske from the sd estate to Mr Charles GRYMES. 1656 Sep 23 --LANCASTER CO VA court The gift of Edward Grimes, dec’d, to Eliz: Dudley of one brown heifer is recorded. 1656 Nov 5 --LANCASTER CO VA court “Whereas Mr Charles GRYMES haveinge in his custody certaine bills & accompts belonginge to the estate of Abraham MOONE dec’d wch Mr GRYMES hath retourned gaine as appeares to this cort, under the hand of the said MOONE discharging hym thereof, it is ordered that Jo: CURTIS administrator of the said MOONE deliver unto Mr GRYMES his specialtie which he gave MOONE for the same with costs.” 1657 May 19 --LANCASTER CO VA court Certificate of land grant to Margarett Grymes, widd, for the transportation of Geo Williams, Joane Maynchard, Daniel ___ and one slave. 1657 Dec 15 --LANCASTER CO VA court tithables list, Mr Dale’s district Widd: Grymes ... 2 1658 Jan 15 --LANCASTER CO VA John WOODINGTON was granted 27a in Lancaster Co, “SEly upon the mouth of Corrotoman River, SWly & NWly upon Iland (sic) Neck Creek, & NEly upon land of Edward GRIMES, dec’d. Granted to Wm RAWTON 15 June 1655 & assigned unto said WOODINGTON.” 1657/58 Jan 27 --LANCASTER CO VA court It appearing to this court that George Willyams hath served Margarett Grymes, widd, according to his indenture & hath not received his freedom clothes according to custom, it is ordered that the sd Margarett Grymes do deliver unto the sd Willyams one new cotton suit, one new shirt, one pair of new stockings one one pair of shoes. Same date & court It appearing to this court that there is due to Margarett Grymes, widd, from Enoch Hawker 876 lbs of tobacco ... 1658 Feb 18 --LANCASTER CO VA Margaret GRYMES, widow, of Lancaster Co signed her will, which mentioned: ---William RAUGHTON her son, and William’s son Thos RAUGHTON; ---Margaret’s daughter Anne WHITE; ---my son-in-law Will WHITE; ---Will WHITE the younger; ---my daughter Frances ROOTS; ---witnessed by Nich: GEORGE and Tho. MARSHALL; ---proved 20 Mar 1659. 1658 Sep 29 --LANCASTER CO VA court According to an order of the Qr. Court in March last at James Citty, it is ordered that the persons hereinafter named pay unto David Linsey, clerke, the sum of 50 lbs of tobacco each in satisfaction of his great pains in the performance of his ministry among them: Widdow Grymes (among many others) 1658 (probably 1658/59) Feb 18 --LANCASTER CO VA Will of Margaret Grymes of Lancaster Co, widow (proved 30 Mar 1659/60): --son Wm Raughton, and his son Thos Raughton; --daughter Anne White; --son-in-law Will: White; --Will: White the younger; --daughter Frances Roots; --witnessed by Nich: George, Thos Marshall. NOTE: It is not clear whether the date should be 1657/58 or 1658/59, but it seems likely that the date closer to her death is more probable. 1659 (1659/60) Mar 30 --LANCASTER CO VA court A probate of the will of Margarett Grymes, widd, dec’d, is granted unto Will: Wroughton. 1662 Mar 2 --LANCASTER CO VA Wm WROUGHTON was granted 440a in Lancaster Co, “190a as follows: Quiacomico Neck containing 150a at the mouth of Corrotoman River, from Grymes Poynt Spring Branch or cove &c, 240a upon W side of said river, N upon land of David FOX, E upon land formerly in possession of Edward GRIMES, & SSW upon a creek dividing this & land of Thos HARWOOD; 50a Ely upon said river, Sly upon said cove or branch called Spring Branch, NNE upon a seate of 80a granted to Edward GRIMES, dec’d, and NWly upon the other two tracts; 390a granted to said GRIMES 15 June 1657 & afterwards left [to] the said WROUGHTON by will & 50a granted to Thos ROOTES 15 June 1655 & by him sold to said WROUGHTON. 1662 Oct 20 --LANCASTER CO VA court tithables list Patrick Grayham ... 2 1663 Jan 18 --no doubt LANCASTER CO VA Mr William BALL was granted 300a (no county shown) “at the head of a small branch proceeding out of the SW side of Narrow Neck Creek, both of which divides this & land in possession of Thos ROOTES formerly belonging to Edward GRIMES, dec’d, &c, to next creek proceeding out of Coratoman River &c; granted to David FOX 1 Nov 1653, assigned to Tho. HOPKINS, & by him sold to said BALL.” 1663 Jun 15 --LANCASTER CO VA Richard LAWRENCE was granted 10a on N side of Rappahannock River [no doubt Lancaster Co] “bounded on S with a branch of Grymes Creek, dividing this & land of Dominick FARRIOTT on W side said creek, on N with a branch of same dividing this & land of Edward GRIMES now in possession of William WROUGHTON & on E with marked trees dividing this & other land of said GRIMES in possession of said WROUGHTON called Quiaccomake.” NOTE: This may indicate that an Edward is living at this time. Whether that’s true or not, the Wroughton name certainly indicates some connection with Edward who died about 10 years earlier 1663 Nov __ --LANCASTER CO VA court In a difference depending between Patrick Grayham & Nich: Hale concerning one year’s service of Olive, the wife of the sd Grayham, wch the sd Hale acknowledging shee had served hym tenne months. 1664 Oct __ --LANCASTER CO VA court tithables list Patrick Graham ... 2 1666 Nov 14 --LANCASTER CO VA court Certificate to Patrick Grayham for the transportation of hym selfe, his wife and John Hollet into this countrey. 1667 Sep 30 --no doubt LANCASTER CO VA Major William BALL was granted 240a, “on N side of Rappahannock River, upon David FOX, land of GRIMES, a creek dividing this & land of Thos HARWOOD; granted unto Edward GRIMES 21 May 1651, deserted, & now granted, &c.” 1668 Nov 11 --LANCASTER CO VA court tithables list Patrick Grymes ... 1 c1669 Middlesex Co was formed from part of Lancaster 1675 Nov 10 --LANCASTER CO VA court tithables list Daniel Grymes ... 1 1677/78 Feb 13 --LANCASTER CO VA court Richard Grimes, servant to Mr Robt Griggs, coming into this country without indenture and appearing at this court, is ordered according to act to serve 11 years from the 4 and 20th day of August last past. 1678 May 1 --LANCASTER CO VA Wm THERRIAT was granted 27a in Lancaster Co, “SE upon the mouth of Corotoman River, SW upon Island Neck Creek, & NE upon land of Edw’d GRIMES, dec’d; granted to Jno WODDINGTON (sic) 15 Jan 1658 & sould to Wm VAUGHAN, & by said VAUGH (sic) sold to Dominick THERRIATT, father of said William, & due him as sonn & heire.” 1679 Dec 10 --LANCASTER CO VA court Special levy enacted to cover various debts in White Chapel Parish, including: [owed] to William Grimes for 2 months as a private soldier ... 250 lbs of tobacco. 1682 Jul 12 --LANCASTER CO VA court Land grant certificate to William “?Graham?” for his transportation to VA of 4 persons. ---BIG GAP--- 1697 Apr 14 --LANCASTER CO VA court John Grimes vs James Phillips; dismist, neither party appearing. 1699 Jul 12 --LANCASTER CO VA court James Grimes, servant to Mr John Turberville, being by this court adjudged to be twelve years old is ordered to be listed a tithable ano 1701. 1700 May 1 --LANCASTER CO VA court A land survey jury reported to court, mentioning “land formerly of Parson Grimes.” ---BIG GAP--- 1717 Sep 14 --LANCASTER CO VA court Inventory of estate of John Graham reported to court by Rebecca Graham. ---BIG GAP--- 1732 May 4 --LANCASTER CO VA court Wm Richardson making oath to his certificate for taking up a negro slave belonging to Col. Charles Grymes of Richmond Co and that no satisfaction had been received .... 1732 May 10 --LANCASTER CO VA court The Honble John Grymes of Middlesex Co is mentioned in a court record. 1733 Feb 12 --LANCASTER CO VA court Thos Flint making oath to his certificate for taking up a servant man belonging to Col. John Grymes of Middlesex Co and that no satisfaction had been received for the same .... 1735 Apr 14 --LANCASTER CO VA court John Grahame, merchant, vs Darby Gallahew; dismist, pltf not appearing. 1744 Jul 11 --LANCASTER CO VA John Graham was security for the marriage of Dr Joseph McAdam & Sarah Ann Pinckard, widow.
