Mike - hi.I don't know if you remember me, but we corresponded about this from Sept, 2006 - Jan. 2007.Since then, I've found a bit more information, as follows (if you have anything new, or pictures of anyone to share, I would welcome those):
4. NANCY4 COFFEY (JOSEPH3, REUBEN2, JOHN1) was born January 01, 1816 in Caldwell County, North Carolina, and died 1887 in Caldwell County, North Carolina. She married WILLIAM OBEDIAH (REV. BILL) GRAGG July 04, 1837 in Caldwell County, North Carolina, son of WILLIAM GRAGG and ELIZABETH MARTIN. He was born April 15, 1758 in Augusta County, Virginia, and died October 20, 1837 in Pinola, Avery County, N. C.
Notes for WILLIAM OBEDIAH (REV. BILL) GRAGG:
William Gragg (Gregg), Jr. (name often appears as William Obediah Gragg, Jr) was born in Augusta County, Virginia on April 15, 1758. He was living in Albemarle County, Virginia (previously part of West Virginia) before and during the American Revolution. William was seven feet tall.
William Gragg entered military service in Albemarle County, VA. in June or July of 1779 in a company commanded by Captain Andrew Wallace of Colonel Taylor's Virginia Regiment. They assisted in guarding prisoners taken earlier in the Battle of Saratoga. He served for about a month.
He next entered service in January 1781 as a substitute soldier in Captain Benjamin Harrison's Company of Colonel John Boyer's V Virginia Regiment (Major Jones, 2nd Officer). The brigade was commanded by General Muhlenberg. They were engaged with the British forces in two skirmishes around Portsmouth, Va. They were reinforced by troops of General Gregory Courthouse on March 15,1781. They counter-marched to Petersburg and Richmond. He was discharged from this tour of duty in April 1781.
In May 1781, he was drafted into military service in Albemarle County, Va. for a three month tour of duty in Captain Henderson's Company of Militia. They were marching toward Richmond to join General Anthony Wayne's forces when he became ill, could not continue, and was furloughed home.
In September 1781, he was drafted for a three month tour of duty in Captain Robert Sharpe's Company. They marched to Yorktown. Va. , joining the forces of General Washington. At that time, they were under the command of General Edward Stevens. He stated that he saw General Washington, General Lafayette, and General Wayne at Yorktown. He continued to serve after the surrender of Cornwallis and was discharged in December 1781. In the meantime, he had been transferred from Captain Sharpe's Company back to Captain Benjamin Harrison's Company of Major Jones' regiment.
After the Revolutionary War, he moved from Albemarle Co. , Va. to Surry County, N.C., living there several years. In 1794 he moved to Caldwell County, N.C. and made his first land purchase on John's River in the Globe Region of Caldwell County. He then moved to Burke County. Also after the war he was called "Revolutionary Bill" to differentiate him from the other William Gregg's (Gragg's).
