Hi Jessie
Just a note to let you know you are on the right track!A lot of interesting material was gathered by George Robert Gragg in a book called "Gragg Descent" published in 1978 and revised in 1983. It is an historical fact that many Scotch-Irish families dropped the Mac usage when arriving in America. It is also a fact that the MacGregor name was literally outlawed by an act of the Scottish parliment."Under pain of death, all men of the name of MacGregor had to take another surname (April 1603)" This was the first of a series of laws aimed at destroying the Clan MacGregor. From "Clans, Septs and Regiments of the Scottish highlands" by Frank Adam and revised by Sir Thomas Innes of Learney Lord Lyon King of Arms other names used by MacGregor members are: Greg, Gregor, Greig.
