Saundra:
It's been awhile since you posted but I just came upon this. Did you ever find info about your Johney Gradney?
I'm trying to find info on JOHN GRADENI (b. mid 1840s). My line follows:
Jean GRADENIGO>>son: Francois>>daughter: Melite>>daughter: Allecia [DESSESSARTS]>>daughter: Clara [ROWE]>>daughter: Ella Mae [BOUTERIE]>>daughter: Jewel [BENGERT]>>daughter: Linda [ALEXANDER] -- me
Now, MELITE is really who I'm chasing right now. Melite was mulatto (mix black, Indian, Italian/white) known to have @ least 5 children by at least 3 men. It appears that JOHN was the oldest (as far as I know). He was listed in records alternately as JOHN GRADENIGO & JOHN GRADENI. Another son by this name was LOUIS JOSEPH GRADENIGO (or GRADENI) b. circa late 1840s].
The other children were Alcibiades & Arthur PERRAULT, sons of a white man named Arthur pb. late 1840s] & my great-great grandmother ALLECIA LUCRETIA DESSESSARTS - her father was apparently son of a well-to-do Opelousas family of the same last name from St. Domingue -- reportedly white but not certain of this. She was b. circa 1850.
Might your JOHNEY have come from my JOHN GRADENIGO/GRADENI? All of the mid-later century records of this family, including Melite, lists them as GRADENI.
Interested in any thoughts or knowledge out there of these names. I've yet to find anyone who's connected.
Thx -- Linda Alexander
