Dear Jocelyn,

I have tried to email you several times, but have been unable to get through.

I am working with another researcher, Katie Brown, and we are trying to
determine the parents of a Mary E. Grabow b. about 3 June between 1858
and 1860 in MN. She married John D. (or Jean Baptiste) Gagne (or
Gagner), in Minneapolis (we think but not verified) in about 1880. Mary
died in 1936 in Minneapolis.

We are wondering if Mary E. Grabow could have any connection to the
Grabow family in Renville and other areas of MN and SD. Would you have
any information that could help us? The only information we have to
connect Mary to the Grabow family is that her father is listed as Grabow
and mother unknown on her death certificate and that she reports on
census records that she was born in MN and that her parents were born in
Germany.

I have checked the city directories for Grabows. I am including below a copy of an email I
sent to two other researchers regarding this directory search.

Please let me know if you can make a connection or not, or if you have
any ideas for other avenues of research.

Thank you,

Jeanne

Hi Katie and Tim,

I spent a fair part of the day at the library looking through city
directories.

I found some things out, but it doesn't help us much. Yet. Remember
that the directories only list employed adults or heads of households.
Here it is:

The first Grabow to show up is in 1875. That doesn't mean much because
I know of several people who were definitely here, but are not in the
directories. Anyway, the first Grabow was John Grabow living at the
corner of 10th and Marshall St. NE (later 929 Marshall NE).

In 1882 there are new listings for a Frederick and a Henry Grabow, both
living at 83 12 av ne (about two or three blocks from John) and by the
next year, they are both living with John Grabow at 929 NE Marshall.

In 1886 a Frank Grabo shows up for one year only.

In 1888, Henry is not listed, but John and Frederick are at 929
Marshall. There is also a Lizzie listed working as a domestic at 1600
Lyndale N.

In 1889, the directory had a little spelling problem. Henry is listed
as Grebin, Henry, driver, 905 ne 2nd St. Frederick and John are listed
as Grebow. Apparently the transcriber had spelling problems that year.

In 1890, Henry is listed as Grabow again, still a driver for the street
railway company and is living at 915 ne 2nd street. Lizzie is working
as a domestic at 2222 Portland Av. There is also a first listing for a
Mrs. Augusta Grabow who boards at the rear of 1721 n 6th st.

In 1892 there is a second Henry living at rear of 723 n 6th st. There
are a lot of mistakes in the early directories and I am speculating that
this Henry might be the son of Augusta from the earlier year.

In 1893 there is a Julius Grabow listed in addition to the
John/Frederick/Henry/John Jr.[1895] family. I am unclear whether he is
ever listed at 929 NE Marshall. When I was at the library, I was sure
he was, but the copy machine wasn't working well and now I can't read
the address for him on my copy. Anyway, Julius ends up living in North
MInneapolis at 1406 Irving Avenue.

In 1895, John W. Grabow, Jr. is listed at 929 ne Marshall and Frederick
has become a Fireman.

In 1898 Henry is Living a 1023 NE Marshall ( a block from John) and
there is a one time only listing for a Johann Grabow residing at the
rear of 1723 n 6th St. (Remember Augusta and the other Henry?)

In 1900 there is a listing for a John Grabo at 2803 n. 3rd av. This is
a one time only listing, and it might be a listing taken where he
worked.

In 1902, Henry Grabow is listed as moving to Shakopee, MN (That is Scott County)
In 1908 John W. Jr. died on 10 May leaving a widow (Anna) and three
kids. He was buried at Hillside Cemetery.

Augusta also died in 1908 on 30 July at the age of 70. I haven't looked
for any more about her yet.

That is all except that by 1909 Julius has a Louise Grabow listed with
him (daughter?) and by 1912 also has Carl [also listed as Karl] and
Elizabeth.

Okay, here is my best guess. I would bet that John Grabow, Sr. is the
father of Frederick, Henry, John Jr., Lizzie, -- our Mary b. 1860, Katie
-- and probably Julius.

I think Augusta is the mother of the other John (Johann), Henry and
maybe Julius and Frank. Or some of them may have been Renville Grabows
who came to the city to make some extra money. Here is another thought,
that Augusta may be the estranged wife of John and the mother of these
same people????????

There is a John Grabow who died in Hennepin County 5/2/1914. I think he
may be our John the father, but it doesn't help us Katie if we can't
connect him to Mary somewhere. I have to get into the 1870 census.

I do remember finding a Grabow girl who was living with another family
in Plymouth, MN in one of the censuses but I have to look again for
that. (Eliza, 1880) I have it here somewhere. I will keep you posted.

Let me know what each of you think.

Tim, I have only one favor to ask from you. What religion was your
Grabow family?

Keep in touch.

Jeanne
