My mother-in-law's grandfather was, I believe, named William Walter and he simply used the W.W. initials. He was a captain in the Confederate War and was killed at the battle of Cointh, Mississippi. When he bought his house from one of his in-laws, he was written of in a letter as being W.W.GOINGS. I believe he was from either N. or S. Carolina, but migrated to Mississippi, possibly ....I haven't my notes with me.....the middle of the state around Oxford or Starksville. I have two letters written by him to a T.A.McCluney in which he calls the recipient either sister or cousin...and another addressed to a T.A.Goings.....He married Sara Bell, a little older than he and from all I can gather, before the war he was a visiting school teacher.....a fanciful man and I can readily believe he changed the spelling of his name because Goyen was more romantic and impressive than Going or Goings......and yes, there were Goyens in Texas about the time you mentioned....the family of the author William Goyen was my husband's second cousin and was from Houston. I'm interested in finding out all possible for my grandchildren. If you can help or if I can help you, my e-mail is james.t.jones@att.net. Good luck to us both.GAJ
