I wonder if there is a link between your John Gowland and my gt gt gt grandmother, Elizabeth Gowland. She was bp 17/3/1787 at Stanhope d/o Ralph and Isabel and married William Walton (miner) at Stanhope 10/3/1810. Most of their children were bp at the Westgate Primitive Methodist Chapel. Her son, William Walton bp 1819, was living in Helmington Row in the 1861 Census and some of the family of his wife, Ellen Dawson, were living in Lynesack.
Any connection?
I have recently found a second Elizabeth Gowland bp Stanhope 1785, d/o Joseph and Mary, but from the repetition of family Christian names, I am still sure that the 1787 Elizabeth is mine.
