Hi!I descend from Micajah Gowan and Polly Craine.Micajah was a brother of Joseph who married Judith Pollard.I understand your acceptance of this DNA evidence, however, it can be flawed or simply incorrect based on a number of reasons.
DNA has shown in my direct line that we are of Native descent.Yet your line says otherwise. You mention DNA as well as photographic support to say there is no connection to Melungeon, Indian, etc...
My father, grandfather, and great grandfather all were light skinned, but had thick lips and wide mouths. They had high cheekbones. They all looked part Indian. One of the descendants of your Joseph and Judith, Relus Marcus Goins, looked basically White, however, his son James Goins born 1901 looked mixed.Again, light skinned, but high cheekbones and thick lips with a somewhat wide mouth.
None of my direct Gowin/Goins line looked Scotish.
Either this DNA testing does not actually work as many claim, or your Joseph was perhaps mixed, going against what you suggest.
Consider the possibility that one of your grandmothers/great grandmothers/gg..etc... did not sleep in the right bed.We all need to be open to such probabilities when researching our genealogy.
Oregon:
Dorothy Jane Goins and sister Emma Lou Goins, daughters of Myrl James Gowin and Rheta B. Hoerle are perfect examples.Myrl was a son to James William Gowin and Annie Ruth Barnett.Myrl was never married to Rheta, however, they had children together, this during Myrl's marriage to Martha Sophia Granum.DNA proved Dorothy and Emma were indeed daughters of Myrl Gowin, and DNA proves Myrl was descended from Stephen Gowin of Hendricks Co., Indiana, yet Dorothy and Emma were linked to a Merle Goins in Louisiana some years ago because of flawed research on the part of a grandson and a man living in Louisiana. Now this Myrl Gowin, son to James and Annie had three children with his actual wife who he married in 1920.He was separated from her for a time, had children with the young Miss Hoerle, then returned to his wife and had three children.Birth records for Dorothy and Emma Goins names Myrl Gowin/Goins as their father.Rheta also named relatives of her children as grandpa James and grandma Anna.Photographic evidence shows they are related. So DNA proved this blood connection, although Dorothy and Emma were raised to believe they were daughters of a Ted C. Davenport, Rheta's husband who shows in Census with he in Texas in 1930.Ted told them her was only their step-father, after raising them as his own.So, without DNA, they would still be linked as children of Rheta Hoerle and Ted Davenport.Thank you DNA for solving that mystery.
Consider the reasoning.Either your Joseph was not a biological son of our William and Anester, or he was not the father of some of his own children.Perhaps one of his descendants, a male Gowan, was cheated on by a wife. This happens every day.
Illinois:
Wayne Goins, a Jazz musician, was told that his grabdfather, a Goins, was not his real grandfather. They all grew up as Goins's, descending from John Going and Mary Kiefe, yet Wayne is not related to the Gowins/Goins lines at all.The grandmother had an affair.DNA will prove Wayne to be of African descent, yet his direct nameline with all it's documentation proving his connection to the Gowans is flawed. It is flawed simply because someone was not honest.
How many children were adopted back in the days when they did not have to do all the proceedures as they do now?How many of them are documented as Gowins when they really are not?
I hope you find for sure you direct bloodline, but please keep in mind ALL possibilities before referring to the DNA as ultimate proof.Dig up the bones of Joseph Gowan and have DNA testing done there, then work your way down, then see if you truely descend from him and Judith.Maybe you do, maybe you don't.
My Micajah was mixed. If Joseph was his actual blood brother, then he was also mixed.
We can all only hope WE have the proper proof.
With respect, James Gowin
