Hello Tony
Thank you very much for your email but I am not sure we are talking about the same Gowers.
My great grandfather was Thomas Arthur Gower who at the time of the 1881 Census was 14 and living with his grandparents (my great great great grandparents) John (aged 60) and Eliza (aged 54) Gower in Welwyn Road, Codicote.Thomas was listed as an agricultural labourer and John as a greengrocer.
I have not been able to trace Thomas's parents but the 1881 Census shows a George and Emily Gower living in White Hill, Welwyn.George and his other 5 children were all born in Codicote and as the eldest of the children was 12 in 1881 I wondered if Thomas had been sent to live with his grandparents.
Since posting the message on the website I have been in contact with a Brian Gower, whose ancestors came from Codicote, and he sent me some information which would suggest that John Gower the greengrocer was the eldest son of George and Ann Gower (nee Sears). However, according to this information, at the time of the 1891 Census John was listed as a labourer (living at 100 Heath Street, Codicote) and I cannot imagine anyone changing his employment from a greengrocer in 1881 to a labourer in 1891 as he would have been 70 by then. This John was also married to an Eliza so it could be the same person.
My great grandfather Thomas married Amy and in the1890's they went to Canada where my grandfather Stanley Frederick Thomas Gower was born in 1892.By time of the 1901 Census the family were back at Rustling End Farm, near Codicote.
I would be grateful for any information you could let me have, as it is so easy to go down the wrong track with these investigations.
Thank you for getting in touch.
Regards
Christine Flanagan.
PS I have a photograph of a one legged-shepherd who I recall my late mother saying was her great grandfather. He was featured in an article in Farmers Weekly (lost long ago I'm afraid) so if he was a Gower from Codicote he may feature in your Local History Society Records somewhere.
