Hi, I'm an "old" Gowdy Illinois descendant and researcher. I am including the most recent update to the Gowdy line that I have received, thanks to Chuck who is descended from Theron. Of great benefit were the Illinois Archive Military Records from the Civil War. I am enclosing the FamilTreeMaker genealogy report so you can read the great letters from the soldier sons. It's so tragic that one family should lose so many sons in the Civil War, but then many families in White Co. lost sons due to the General Lyons steamship explosion when they were travelling home. NOTE: The White County Website has changed to a new site. Use Google to find it. Descendants of Theron Carlisle GOWDY Generation No. 1 1. THERON CARLISLE5 GOWDY (ROBERT4, WILLIAM3, WILLIAM2, FATHER1) was born 21 Feb 1803 in Sumner Co., TN, and died 1878 in White Co., IL. GOWDY, b. 1836, Enfield, White Co., IL; d. 31 Mar 1865, SS General Lyon Explosion at sea nr. NY. Notes for JOHN A. GOWDY: [Finley.FTW] Letter John wrote to his parents 11 Oct 1862: Dear Father, Mother, Brothers and Sisters, I feel to thank God that I am spared to write you a few lines to let you kow that I am well at this time hoping these few lines will find you all well when they reach you. I have nothing of importance to write you but howsoever I will tell you of our little fight with old Price. We gave him a good licking and he skedaddled. The fight began last Friday and ended on Saturday about 2 o'clock. We were in Saturday's fight and thank heaven we came through safe and sound without a scratch. I tell you we were in a hot place. The bullets whizzed around my head and it made me feel all over spotten but I just lay flat on the ground and loaded and shot-killed all I could. The 6th Missouri Batteries were placed on the line one of our line, and Secesh made a charge on the one we were at. The 12th Illinois Regiment and the 80th Ohio were supporting the batteries and when the Rebels charged on the battery they both ran and left us alone for a while but we poured in such a blast they couldn't stand. They turned from the Battery and the old 56th charged on the Battery and retook it. When we started away every man and boy hollowed with all their might and you never saw men run the way they ran. There were some of them got into Corinth and cross fired on us but thank God they did not hurt us much. There were two Rebel generals killed, one by the name of Rogers and the other by the name of Johnson, and there was one Secesh Captain killed in General Sullivan's headquarters right in Corinth. There were seven killed in our Regiment and twentyseven wounded. There was not one killed in our Company and only one wounded - William Tate got shot through the arm. The 19th Missouri and the 56th were what saved Corinth. The Rebel loss was very great - double what ours was our Adjutant went along the line the evening after the battle and said he never saw the like for dead men. There is talk of old Bragg and J.C. Breckinridge attacking Corinth again, but I think old Price is satisfied, and if they come we will do them the same way, for there are several of the Illinois Regiments yet and they are mighty spunky and they fight too. If the enemy don't think they will just let them try us. And them that think the Secesh won't fight let them come and see. If they had been in my place and heard the bullets whizz as I did, they would say they will fight. Our men have taken several prisoners. It makes a man feel curious to go into battle but after the first gun fire that feeling is over. I will close for this time. I will ask you to excuse my bad wrote letter and write as soon as you get this, so no more at this time. I shall remain your affectionate son until death, so farewell. John A. GOWDY, b. 1840, Enfield, White Co., IL; d. 31 Mar 1865, SS General Lyon Explosion at sea nr. NY. Notes for MILTON B. GOWDY: [Finley.FTW] Ten days before the meeting of GRant and Lee at the Appomattox Court House and just 15 days before Lincoln was assassinated, 400 Federal soldiers boarded the General Lyon for home. Off the coast of NC a storm overturned great casks of kerosene on the upper deck. The kerosene seeped down to the furnace and there was an explosion. The ship was ablaze and nearly all on board were lost. The men either burned to death or drowned trying to escape. The toll on boys from White Co., IL was tremendous. There is a memorial there listing the many names which are found in The History of White County, Illinois. More About MILTON B.
