Cathy: I have only found Ann Scott as the first wife of Hon. William Gowdy, Jr. in S. M. Rankin's book on Buffalo Church of Guilford Co., NC. One Scott researcher told me no Ann Scott is shown related to the PA/NC line, Ann's supposed father never moved to Guilford Co., and this Scott line descends through different people. This researcher cited land records to prove his point.

Many of us believe William Gowdy, Jr. (judge and State Senator of Guilford Co., North Carolina) was related to one or all Ohio Gowdy/Goudy lines. I still believe there was an earlier "Scott" connection to my Gowdy family.

I have a document written by William which refers to his son as "William Scott James Gowdy, III". He called himself "William Gowdy, Jr." and we believe his father was a William Gowdy, Sr. of York Co,. PA.

None of William Jr's other children have recorded middle names. He calls them by their first names only in his will, making me suspect William III was his eldest son.

I had assumed William III's name came from a "William Scott" and "James Gowdy" ancestor. But, it's possible both SCOTT and JAMES are family surnames. My ancestor was William Jr.'s great-grandson, William Porter Anderson Craig. See? The inclusion of two surnames appears further down in the family.

It appears that William, Jr. was from Chester (York) County, PA. In the James Family forum, I found a query that stated a "Benjamin Franklin James, b. abt 1814, owned a mill and lived in Warwick, Chester Co., PA". Possibly this Benjamin inherited this mill from earlier Jameses.

Because of Mahlon Gowdy's book, we have looked for at least one family mill in Pennsylvania or Maryland - possibly in the Baltimore area. The Goudies of Baltimore are certain their line had a mill. I have never found a Gowdy who actually owned one. Could it possibly be the mill was in an in-law's surname such as James?

If James proves to be a surname in this family, it could open up whole new areas of research that might connect the Baltimore, Ohio and North Carolina Gowdy/Goudy lines. It's even possible the James connection was with Scott and not Gowdy.
