Dear Jean,

Yes! I, too, have discovered misleading statements in Rankin's "History of the Buffalo Church." While the marriage dates and cemetery incriptions appear to be valid, Rankin's rambling commentary is "tainted" with unsubstantiated tales told to him by well-meaning contributors in the 1950s.

Thank you for noting the logic errors you and your sister have found regarding the GOUDY family. I, too, have uncovered numerous errors regarding the FULTON family, compounded by [bracketed notes] inserted by editors Ruth F. Thompson and Louise J. Hartgrove, "Abstracts of Marriage Bonds & Additional Data, Guilford Co., NC, 1791-1840" published in 1981 by the Guilford County Genealogical Society.

Do you recognize any of the names associated with the following abstract of William GAWDY?

"GAWDY, William; 2 Sep 1816; probate not given; Catherine HAMILTON of Pittsburgh, PA; Sarah GAWDY a minor in care of Samuel COOPER of Chambersburg, PA. Exec: Thomas FULTON. Witness: Eleanor CHAMBERS, John McVEY, Thomas LINDLEY."

This Will is recorded in Orange County, INDIANA! [SIC -- Orange County organized December 1816.] Executor Thomas Fulton is a former resident of Orange Co, NORTH CAROLINA.

FULTON connection ...

On 2 Oct 1792, Thomas Fulton recorded marriage bond to marry Catherine Lynch, Samuel Fulton co-bondsman. (Orange Co, NC)

On 15 Feb 1793, Thomas Fulton was bondsman for marriage between Moses Lynch and Susannah Dickey. (Orange Co, NC)

Around 1811-1813, Jonathan Lindley of Orange Co, NC, organized a emigrant wagon train to the Northwest Territory, now Indiana. [Read more about it on the LINDLEY Genforum.] Upon arrival, the NC settlers named their new county "Orange County" and named the county seat "Paoli" after Pasquale Paoli Ashe, son of the North Carolina governor.

Thomas and Catherine (Lynch) Fulton were part of this NC migration and the GAWDY abstract noted above proves that he was living in the area in 1815. On 3 Oct 1822, William Dickey Lynch, son of Moses and Susannah (Dickey) Lynch, married Mary Lindley at Orange Co, IN.

OK -- does anyone recognize William GAWDY who died before September 1815??? Because Thomas Fulton, former resident of Orange Co, NC, is named executor, I suspect this William GAWDY is also connected to Orange Co, NC.
