For years my sister and I have believed that the wife of our ancestor, State Senator William Gowdy of NC, was Ann Scott. This was stated in Rankin's book on Buffalo Presbyterian Church and Her People (Guilford Co.). My sister, Judy Driscoll, has finished delving into records in that county and reviewing the book. She believes that the William Jr. who married Ann Scott in his book was not this William since in all other cases he called him William Gowdy, Esq. His father WAS a William so he could be a Junior, but Rankin didn't appear to know that. His son, William, was married to Ann Anderson. Judy believes Rankin had these two Gowdy's confused. So, we are now tending to believe that Ann Scott is not our ancestor. There is a Scott link somewhere in the family, though, since William, Esq. used Scott in the middle name of one of his sons. We have been told a Miss Rhea was the rightful wife. Does anybody have any information on this? William is mentioned in her father's will. Notify Administrator about this message?
