Hello Dennis,
Based on the information I have (which isn't very much) I have always felt there were some important details left out of this story. My mother tells he was imprisoned in the tower of London for some time and may have come to the US to avoid execution. The question is how? One does not simply walk out of the tower and hitch a ride to the US.
My maternal grandmother was a Gove by birth and some of these stories had been handed down through the generations. My aunt has been working on some research, but I'm not sure what she's found.
I agree with you though that the whole mystery seems intriguing! Please feel free to write back if you have and information, questions or information.
