My family records indicate that I am a descendant of a James Gourley (born on August 23, 1810 in Ireland) and Margaret Young Travis (born on December 7, 1818 in Pennsylvania). These records indicate that James Gourley was the son of George Gourley (born in 1769 in Ireland) and Rosanna McNeal (born about 1783). They indicate that Margaret Young Travis was the daughter of William Travis (born on October 27, 1774) and Mary Gahagan (born about August 29, 1779).
The 1850 U.S. Census for Indiana County, Pennsylvania, shows that there was a family with a James Gourley (age 39, born in Ireland, a blacksmith), a Margret Y. Gourley (age 31, born in Pennsylvania), a Louisa B. Gourley (approximate age 13), a May R. Gourley (age 9) a Margret A. Gourley (age 7) a Joseph Gourley (age 4), and a John M. Gourley (age 2). The census enumerator probably misspelled some of the names.
My family records indicate that I am a descendant of the John M. Gourley mentioned in the 1850 U.S. Census materials mentioned above. My branch of the Gourley’s moved to Ford County, Illinois where my grandfather and mother were born.
