I was thinking in today's terms ,I guess. I later realized that they didn't serve a continuous enlistment.The thing that confused me was that he wasn't listed as a Captain at King's Mountain.The PA sevice would have been prior,so I assumed he would have retained his rank as they do now. My mother was given an old paper that gave her direct line back to Captain Thomas. Earlier researchers just disregarded the Gourleys who settled here in Blount County,TN.My Smiths also came here from the Watauga Settlement.They are included in the book,"Tennessee Smithology".There are still Borings,Tiptons, Pattons,McKeehans etc., who are descendants of Watauga Ancestors living here. Not everyone moved West.
