Here is what I have on Samuel L. Gourley. If you can add anything to this, please let me know. All this information came from "Captain Thomas Gourley & Kin" by Negetha Gourley-Powers. Negetha is blind & her daughter, Jeanne Powers, lives with her. They live outside Bristol, VA.

Thomas Gourley, b. 1835, was the son of Henry Gourley, b. 29 Sep 1806; d. after 1870 Carter Co., TN. He md. 1)13 Jan 1831 to Sidney Dowlan. Elizabeth Gourley, b. ca 1840, was their daughter. Sidney died sometime between 1840-1842, as Henry was md. on 30 June 1842 to Charity Whitehead in Carter Co. They had 2 ch: Mary A. Gourley, b. ca 1850 & Henry Gourley, b. ca 1859.
Henry Gourley, b. 1806, was 4th of 11 children born to William Gourley & Elizabeth Schultz or Scholtz. William was born 14 Mar 1775 in PA; d. 1 July 1860 Carter Co., TN, the eldest child of Capt. Thomas Gourley & Martha "Hannah" McNeeley. Elizabeth Schultz was b. 15 Mar 1780/1783; d. 25 Feb 1847 Carter Co., TN.
Capt. Thomas Gourley was born 1752 in Balleymena, Shankill, Belfast, Antrim County, Ulster, Ireland & died 1796 in Camden, SC. He came to Lancaster, PA in 1768 at the age of 16, & joined the Maryland Rangers (stayed for 2 yrs). In 1772, at age 20, he md. Martha Hannah McNeeley in Lancaster, PA. He fought at the famous Battle of King's Mountain in the same combat unit as John Sevier. He was discharged from this unit at Yorktown in 1781 & chose to take his alloted acres in what is now Carter Co., TN. This land was located in the Watauga Settlement & John Sevier & John Tipton were his neighbors. He erected a log cabin & sometime between 1781-1783, wife Martha, & sons, Charles McDonnell & William joined him there. At that time the Watauga Settlement was located in Washington Co., NC. He lived to see the Watauga Settlement become a disputed battleground between the State of Franklin & the State of North Carolina (the collapse of the State of Franklin came in late Feb 1788), & he also lived to see his home become a part of the newly formed Carter County which became a part of the state of Tennessee (1 June 1796, President George Washington signed a bill admitting Tennessee as the 16th state.) Thomas's neighbor, John Sevier, became it's 1st govenor. The first tax list were drawn up in 1797 & Thomas is listed as a householder.
