The Five Ships and the People who came with the Rev. William Martin
These are the families who came on the five ships with the Rev Martin. They emigrated from Ulster to SC in 1772.Most of them were Covenantors, and a few Catholics.
The ships were:
James and Mary sailed 1772, August from Larne
There was smallpox on board when they arrived in Charleston harbor in October and they were required to remain on board, lying off of Sullivan's Island, in quarantine until the first part of December. The records for its passengers are less clearly marked in the Colonial Council journals.
A single person received 100 acres of land. A married man got an additional 50 acres for a wife and an additional 50 for each child or dependent under 16. No married woman, unless a widow could take land. A single woman could. The immigrant also received 10 pounds in gold to build a house. The settlers could not settle together as a community, so you will find these people scattered throughout the inland area.

Brigantine "Free Mason" sailed from Newry, Ireland on 27 Oct 1772 and landed on 22 Dec 1772; Captain John Semple.
No.446 on the list is Hugh Gorely or Gourley (it is spelled Gorely) who sailed aboardthe "Free Mason"and it shows that he received 100 acres.Information probably can be found in memorial list land records for Charleston/Charlestown S. C in 1772-1773.
For you Gourley researchers, I would bet that this is my GGGGGF Capt. Thomas Gourley's brother, Hugh. Can't prove yet.
I will be going to Charleston for Xmas. I will endeavor to see the records at that time.
Thanks
Gloria
