Sorry for the delay.I don't remember if I emailed you direct, or failed to answer in any form.
In the 1880 census, James lived in Baltimore, Md.at 134 Jefferson, and was born in Ireland in 1840.According to a biography of Baltimore families, James immigrated to the US with his parents at age 9 in 1849, settling in Baltimore and later Prince George Co., Md.They remained there until James was 18 (1855).
Apparently in 1855, James entered the service of the Weems Steamboat Co. of Baltimore, with which he was connected for 47 years until 1902.He was a master of various vessels. In 1897, he commanded the steamer ST. Mary.
He married Mary Weaver approx. 1855.She was 15 at the time.
That's about all I know.I haven't spent much time looking for the shipping records.
