Hi Lisa,

Since I last posted a message on here - 3 years ago! I haven't followed up at all and never did get to Bohola, in County Mayo, unfortunately. However . . . watch this space! Because, this year, I AM going, hopefully within the next couple of months. I DID acquire a photograph of my great grandfather who emigrated from Bohola with his new wife (also in the picture although I don't yet know her maiden name) in the late 19th century.

The picture is a good one and was taken around 1908 outside his new home in Wrightington, Lancashire, England. It HAS been professionally enhanced and re-touched to remove the ravages of time, and it WILL be posted on here as soon it has also been professionally scanned; for the benefit of yourself and all other researchers of their Goulding ancestry.

I believe that, particularly when we are talking about the 19th century, physiognomy or physical features and characteristics were "purer" then in the sense that they were obviously less diluted by outside genes; and therefore, the appearance of a person from that era can provide more clues to relationships with others from the same family background, by the similarities between their physical appearances.

My great grandfather had what we sometimes call "rabbit teeth" i.e. two front teeth that were large and clearly defined (not protruding as in "buck" teeth) and this may have been a Goulding family trait, one can't be sure unless one can compare with other photos. And my great grandmother was of particularly striking appearance - of very heavy build and powerful looking, and not at all feminine in appearance. Her facial appearance in particular, would no doubt compare closely with other members of her family, if I knew the family she came from. (Of interest of course, to others researching the history of ancestral lines that married INTO Goulding families from that area). They may have married in the Bohola church, but she will have lived close by, almost certainly, so the record of the ceremony should exist there or in another church not too far away.

Anyway, please do keep in touch for any reason (and anyone else researching the geographical area of County Mayo in the West of Ireland for Gouldings). I can be reached directly at j.think at hotmail in the uk.

Best wishes, Jeff Goulding.
