William GOULDING was born in early 1844 in Cockermouth, Cumberland, the son of William Goulding and Isabella Birkett. On October 31, 1867, he married Jane BIRD in the Whitehaven Register Office. Jane already had a son, William Bird, who was born around August, 1864 in Appleby, Westmoreland. William and Jane went on to have four children of their own: Elizabeth, Henry, John and Albert. All the children were born in Appleby, Westmoreland. Elizabeth around October, 1868, followed by Henry about 1870, John about 1873 and Albert about 1874. The 1881 census shows that the family moved to Wolfes Row, Limpsfield, Surrey. The 1901 census shows William and Jane living at 19 Boscawen Place in Devonport. Also living at that address are daughter Elizabeth, now married to John FRY, and their four children, twins Albert and John and daughters Dora and Elizabeth. Son Henry appears to have married Lily Louise Joan Cook and they had a daughter, Beatrice Goulding, born about 1898. They are living at 1 Keyham Cottages in Devonport at the time of the 1901 census. John cannot be found in the 1901 census. Albert is living with his wife, Beatrice E., at 5 Keat Street in Devonport. William Bird is shown in the 1881 census as "William Bird (Goulding)", an indication that he likely assumed the surname of his stepfather. I am fairly certain, but not positive, that I have found him and his family in the 1901 census living at Railway Huts in the parish of Kingswood in Reigate, just north of where Gatwick Airport now stands. He is married to Sarah and they have five children: William, Henry, Arthur, Lily and Walter (all with the Goulding surname). The family members living in Devonport seem to have jobs in a sawmill. I would appreciate hearing from anyone with any information about the above family. Notify Administrator about this message?
