According to the oral testimony of my great grandfather Daniel Gould to his children, he was innocent of this charge. He fought back against a youth, like himself, who bullied him unmercifully. I guess he won the fight. Unfortunately, the young man died. He was white; Daniel Gould was "colored" or "mulatto". But it was self-defense. For that, they were going to hang my great grandfather. A sympathetic jailer helped him to escape in 1884. He changed his name to Scott and started a new life in Tennessee. I wish there was a way to clear his name.
