James died at age 37 in the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House on 10 May 1864 and was listed as missing in action after the battle. There is a monument dedicated to him and his parents, Gideon and Mary Masters Gould in the Martin Hill Cemetery in the Town of Catlin.
Does anyone know for certain if he is buried here or as an unknown in Spotsylvania?
The Gould family was related by marriage to the Backer, Ferenbaugh and Oldfield families of Catlin, Chemung County and Hornby, Steuben County.
