Hi Sue.

Firstly, I should mention that this isn't actually my family, but my cousin's father's: our mothers are sisters.

As you probably know, records for St Nicolas Church, Newbury, aren't on the IGI, but a friend who lives near, and is a voluntary transcriber at, Reading Records Office, kindly did masses of PR lookups for the prolific Newbury GOUGHs, from which I've tried to piece together a tree. However, it's sometimes hard to know who's who, with the repeated use of the same forenames!

I'd like details of your James & his wife please, but won't go further down the line thanks.

As for James' father William, there are at least 3 possibilities. He may be the one chr 20/1/1769 Newbury, son of Henry & Winifred nee SHAW (they are my cousin's ancestors), but there were 2 other Williams chr in nearby Wantage, one b 28/4, chr 1/5/1763, son of John & Mary, the other b 24/3 chr 6/4/1768, son of Thomas & Sarah.

Further details of the tree can be seen on GenesReunited. There were GOUGHs in Newbury back to at least the 1500s, but the older spellings are GOFF(E), and possibly CORFFE.

Hope this helps.

Jay
