Yes I am the one doing the One-name Study (for my sins). Thomas is actually quite easy to find in the 1861 and 71 census indexes. Links with the Palmer family show up in the 61 census and are realised in the 71 census - not sure if you are following any of those folks.
Unfortunately the only links I have with New Zealand are on my mother's side - I have maternal relatives up in the Bay of Islands area.
