Goff/Goffe and the Gough's

I would like to clear up something about the relationship between the Goff/Goffe and the Gough's.

To many people have been claiming kin to General William Goffe and part of the confusing is that Willyam Goffe was not kin to General William Goffe, and neither was his relatives.

I have in my hand the will of Willyam Goffe. The 1627 will of Willyam Goffe, Essex Co. England. In this will it shows.

... First I will bequest unto my loving wife (If she still a widow) the sum of one hundred pounds of lawful money of England....and the other forty pounds shall be the only use of my two sons Willyam & John....(These are the only ones mentioned in his will. At the end of this will it shows "I give to my brother Edward Goffe thirty shillings to be paid within one year after my demise. Renouncing all former wins by me made...." Edward Goffe was also one of the witness of this will - dated 29 February 1627

Willyam Goffe (son of Willyam) came to Virginia (USA) and changed his name to William Goffe and later changed to William Gough in order to patent land in Virginia. At that time no one with the last name Goffe could patent land anyplace in the USA, This Willyam Goffe died in 1660.

The Gough Family: John Gough who was married to Alice Belfiel changed his name to John Goffe and was the Grandfather of General William Goffe (Regicide). This is the first time the Goff or Goffe name was used in my family.

Joseph Gough, USA
