This blows the theory of John being one of the first Goddard/Gothards in SC.
SOME "Early" SOUTH CAROLINA MARRIAGE RECORDS: 1641-1799
MANWARING, MARY married GODDARD, FRANCIS, Jan. 14,1713
GODDARD, MARY married BRITTEN, TIMOTHY, Apr. 10,1743
Is the Mary Goddard the widow of the Francis? Based on this marriage record, it's possible that Francis was one of the earliest Goddard/Gothards in SC. Where did he come from? I may dig around for info on him.
Surely some of the other researchers of our line have checked wills in SC for any information. I wish they would jump into this conversation with some tips or clues. I'm afraid I may have offended some of the other researchers because I ask for proof that the Alabama Gothards descend from the George Gothard of Laurens Co., SC. Oh well, it looks like it's up to you and I to solve this mystery.
By the way, I didn't forget about the article that you wanted a copy of from the Chattanooga Free Press. I can't seem to locate my copy. When I find it, I'll get a copy to you. I hope it's filed in one of my many boxes or folders. I haven't had it out since I sent a copy to another researcher a year or so ago.
