Was Jacob Stacy Gossett in TN?

Since locating my uncle, Claude Stacy, I have been informed that my grandfather, Jacob Stacy Gossett, lived in TN, had a family and land, and killed a man in a barroom fight, then left everything behind & went to Texas. Jacob was still at home with parents in 1880 census (12 yrs. old). The 1900 census shows him at 32 yrs. old, married to Lear Alice with 5 children. He married about 1888, making him about 19 yrs. when they married. He could have stopped in TN when he left home, but this incident would have to have happened between 1880 and 1885, 12 and 18 years of age. There were many Gossetts in TN at that time; perhaps, some of you researchers have this information.
