My great great grandmother, Ellen O'Gorman was born in 1837 in Pakenham, Renfrew County, Ontario. She was the daughter of John Gorman , (1765-1857) and John's 2nd wife, Mary Foley (1794-1882) who was a daughter of Patrick Foley and Catherine Purcell.John's 1st wife, Johanna McGuire of Carrigaholt bore him 6 children.Mary, his 2nd wife bore him 8 children, Ellen being the youngest.
John was born at Tarman, near Kilrush, Co. Clare in 1765.He was the son of Dan Gorman (b. 1740 in the same place) and ____ Foley, a daughter of Malachy Foley of Carrigaholt, Clare.
Daniel Gorman was the son of Darby Gorman who lived as a tenant on lands at Tarman, near his ancestral lands at Tullycrien, from which according to family traditions his grandfather or great grandfather Malachy Gorman was dispossessed by Cromwell.Tullycrien, an estate of about 1200 acres of land, was taken from Malachy and three other Gormans and given to Capt. Wm. Hamilton.
The Tullycrien Gormans were descendants of Donal MacGorman, the third son of Conbhach MacGorman who was the second son of John MacGorman, the chief of the MacGorman's at Ibrickan, Clare.
