Elsie,
Read my msg above about James Gorman, stowaway from Ireland.Do you think James could be one of the long lost brothers of Stephen?
What I know:James was b. abt 1805 Ireland per census. He married Elizabeth O'Bryant on 29 Jun 1843, in Vermilion County, IL.She is the d/o Holcomb and Elizabeth (Starns) O'Bryant. The O'Bryant's migrated from Washington Co., VA to Grainger Co., TN, to Indiana then to Illinois.
James is on the 1850 census Edgar County, IL. The 1860 and 1870 census Vermilion Co., IL.
What I don't know:About everything but I have a gut feeling his mother's name was Mary due to the fact that the first daughter was named Mary and you know how those Irish men were about their mothers. If he went to the trouble to sneak back to Ireland, against the threat of his life and just to see her, she was important to him.
Also what I don't know:Where was this man for 38 years before he married Elizabeth? Was he married before?Did he meet Elizabeth in VA, TN or after they arrived in IL?
One problem about the possibility of Stephen and James being related is that James was here in 1843.Wasn't the potato famine about 1840-50?
Another interesting note.James' first son was named Patrick. He died when he was a year old.The next son was named John.I always thought his father was probably Patrick.Other sons were Andrew, William, James and Thomas. These are not O'Bryant names.I have that family documented.I assume they're Gorman names.
What do you think?Let me know if any of this might ring a bell.Thanks.Dorothy
