Did your grandfather have any brothers and sisters, and are any of them still living? If so, be sure and talk to them about family and see what they tell you. Also, if you have any cousins, descendants of them, talk to them too. If the Jerry Gore that I found on the 1880 census is yours, then William T. Gore had at least two sisters, you might check and see if you can find any information on them. Since you are just beginning, start with yourself and go back, generation to generation, like you, your parents, your grandparents, great grandparents and don't forget the females in your family and you can always check with brothers and sisters. When you are checking census reports, keep a list of the neighbors around your family as they may eventually end up marrying into the family.
