DISSECTING THE GORE WILLS
For months, the two William Gore wills of 1587 and 1656 have been analyzed and discussed. Because the second 1656 will listed so many Poore cousins, both have remained a hot topic. On quick inspection, the two wills seem to float one to the other as the senior William, Lord of Garlags Manor, transfers it to his eldest son. William #2 then wills it to his wife. He died in 1655. It is this second will of William #2 (actually #5) that records the names of so many Poore cousins. The odd thing is, none of us looked at the time difference between the two documents, which is a space of 123 years. Re-reading both wills in detail and doing secondary research on Garlags Manor, I found that there would have been two more generations between the two William Gores. I assembled a connected generational map of the Gores of Nether Wallop, Hampshire, based on an average age of 21 and 75 for marriage dates and life spans. The manor of Garlags is ancient and has born the same name up to the present day. It is located at the southern end of Nether Wallop, on Wallop Brook. Raided by Vikings and Saxons, it was home for the Saxon Earl Godwin 980-1053. It was the birthplace of Lady Godiva. The abbess of Amesbury, Wiltshire traditionally owned it, the surrounding farms, the abbey and the church of St Andrews. Underground tunnels and hiding places for priests inter-connect all farm, manor, abbey and church buildings.
Gores of Garlags, Nether Wallop
1. Mary Gore 1366-1436 Abbess of Amesbury, owner of Garlags Manor and church.
76 year gap, assuming that the manor lands stayed in the Gore family:
2. William Goore, Lord of Garlags 1512 –1587 (will#1), m. abt. 1533 to Joane -?-had 9 children:
3. William Gore 1534-1610 married 1559 (estimated) heir to Garlags Manor. His wife’s name is unknown and he had at least one son, probably named William (#4 below) William Gore and Margaret Reade were co-executors of his father’s will. (Notes of interest: William is the only one in will # 1 that has his name as GORE. All others are written as Goore. Three years prior to this will, at St Martins Parish, Salisbury; John Poore married Dorothy Reade on Oct 19, 1584.) Siblings of William #3:
· Richard Goore b. abt.1536
· John Goore1538
· Nicholas Goore 1540
· William Goore II 1542
These 4 younger brothers inherited estates at Newington, Wilts and Basingstoke, Hants.
· Agnes Goore1544
· Elizabeth Goore 1546
· Barbara Goore1548
· Margery Goore 1550 (all 9 sibling birth dates are estimated
4. (William?) Gore 1560-1635, son of William #3, Lord of Manor, married 1581 (all years estimated) had brother and sister:
· Richard Gore 1562- 1642 (estimated) was one of 3 shipping agent for the New England-bound ship, Confidence, that left Southampton in April 1638. Passengers included his cousin, Nicholas Wallingford (Wallington) and many other local Hampshire people, bound for Newbury and Salisbury Plantations. From will #2, we know that Richard had at least one son:
oJohn Gore 1585-1640 (estimated).
· Nicholas Gore of Farley, Hants (near Romsey) had son:
o Nicholas Gore
· Sister Gore married Thomas Singer-had children
· Sister Gore married Richard Miller of Broughton, Hants, which was also the home village of John Poore, cousin of William Gore #5 (below).
(Note: The Poore cousins may be part of this group of uncles and aunts of William Gore #5. Richard and Nicholas may have had another sister who married William Poore, who had William Poore and Elizabeth Poore. In 1652 there was a William Poore, clergyman, who lived at the vicarage of Baddesley, near Romsey. Another Poore cousin of William Gore #5 was Mary Poore who married John Power, probably of the Lymington, Hants Power family.
5. William Gore Lord of the Manor (son of William #4) born (abt.) 1577 died 1655 with proved will#2 married Elizabeth-?Had no known children, entire estate left to wife (inherited portion of Garlags manor and part of orchard) and named cousins, uncles and friends and a ‘brother’ of the church. From his will, besides the Poores and some of his uncles and possible husbands of aunts (already listed), he records the following siblings:
· Margaret Gore Singer had:
o Amy Singer
o Jane Singer
o Roger Singer
· Sister -?Gore Wallingford had:
o Nicholas Wallingford (Wallington) born 1619 emigrated to Newbury 1638
o Elizabeth Wallingford
· Sister -? Gore married Robert Sadler “my brother-in-law”
